I’ve been a long-time fan of Euro Truck Simulator 2 (ETS2). From 2018 to 2021, ETS2 was a streaming staple on platforms like Twitch—a category that drew in both dedicated sim enthusiasts and casual viewers alike. However, over the past few years, I’ve noticed a marked decline in both the number of streamers showcasing ETS2 and the size of the viewing audience. I’m curious: has anyone else observed this fall? And if so, what do you think are the reasons behind it?
My Experience Then vs. Now
The Golden Era (2018–2021):
Back then, ETS2 offered a unique blend of relaxed gameplay, immersive road-trip vibes, and an engaging community. Streamers could build narratives around their journeys, and viewers enjoyed the blend of realism and casual banter. The game’s niche appeal made for an intimate streaming environment where every live session felt like a shared road trip. The Shift in Interest (Post-2021):
In recent times, I’ve noticed a significant drop-off in both the number of ETS2 streams and the overall viewer engagement. The category that once thrived with interactive gameplay and a loyal audience now seems to be fading into the background. Personally, I’m left wondering what changed—is it the game itself, or have streaming preferences evolved?Possible Reasons for the Decline
Several factors might explain why ETS2 is no longer as popular on streaming platforms as it once was:Evolving Viewer Preferences:
Today’s streaming audiences often gravitate toward high-intensity, visually dynamic content. Simulation games like ETS2—though rich in detail and atmosphere—might not provide the constant action that attracts larger, more mainstream audiences. Many analysts have noted that as streaming platforms grow, viewers are increasingly drawn to genres that promise quick thrills and high engagement .Content Saturation & Niche Appeal:
While ETS2 built a strong community in its early years, its niche appeal may have reached a saturation point. With the rise of competing titles and even other simulation experiences (like American Truck Simulator), the unique charm of ETS2 might now be seen as one option among many, rather than the must-watch category it once was.Algorithm & Platform Changes:
Changes in streaming algorithms and the overall platform ecosystem can impact visibility. If a game doesn’t generate high engagement or frequent interactions, it might not be as prominently featured in recommendations—further reducing its exposure to potential new fans .Community Dynamics:
The ETS2 community has always been passionate, but as streaming evolves, communities can fragment. Some longtime fans may have shifted to other games or platforms, leading to a natural decline in streaming numbers. It’s a multifaceted issue where market trends, community behavior, and platform strategies all play a role.Questions for the Community
Have you noticed the same drop in ETS2 streams or viewership? What’s your take on why this is happening?
Do you think the gameplay style of ETS2 no longer aligns with current viewer expectations?
Could competing simulation titles or changes in streaming algorithms be factors?
What improvements or changes might reinvigorate ETS2 as a streaming category?
I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Whether you’re a streamer who’s experimented with ETS2 recently or a viewer who misses the old days of ETS2 road trips, let’s discuss what might be behind this decline—and if there’s a way to bring back that unique charm that made ETS2 so captivating.February 12, 2025 at 12:11 pm #295KenParticipantOne possible reason is as long as SCS delays releasing the Russia DLC, as when SCS goes online for their various game trips/DLC release online watch parties, I see quite a lot of people are clamoring for its’ release. Another is that ETS2 is older, the core release countries (and lack of certain countries) being of less quality and are in need of need attention (like Germany and Nordics are receiving). However – with the freeware maps from ProMods that add even more places to roam (like Iceland and Middle East), I myself would think streamers in Europe would do more. Me, being from the USA and have never gotten closer to Europe than Iceland, I thoroughly enjoy ETS2, and keep hoping they will get to expanding to Ireland and do major rework of Wales, Scotland and England. That alone might spark some new streamers on ETS2. They certainly are not hurting (or lacking) in the truck and trailer models in ETS2!
Now, one would think that with Truckers MP and SCS’s now given ability to have a multi-player environment , streamers would be more in tune with doing such.
